Helen H. Harper, 53, of Las Vegas, passed away Aug. 7, 2010. She was born Jan. 13, 1957, in Saskatoon, Canada. She is survived by her loving husband, Tom Bean; mother, Nadia; stepfather, Ken Gray; brothers, Rob (Marcia) and Keith (Kelly); a niece; a nephew; and many aunts, uncles and cousins. Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 14, at Palm Mortuary, 7400 W. Cheyenne Ave., Las Vegas, NV 89129. Helen was a professor of cultural studies and English education in the Curriculum and Instruction Department, College of Education at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Helen was a widely published scholar and co-editor of the International Reading Association journal, Journal of Adolescent & Adult Literacy with her husband, Professor Thomas W. Bean. Dr. Harper mentored numerous doctoral students in dissertation research, both in Canada at the University of Western Ontario and at UNLV.
