Gunther was born on December 9, 1940 to Johanna (Bernarska) and Artur Voigt in Lodz, Poland while Poland was under German control. Gunther, his mother, and his brother, Horst, were forced to flee to Austria in 1944. His father and grandfather were eventually able to join them and in 1950, Gunther's uncle living in Chicago, IL, sponsored them enabling them to move to America. Gunther and his family took a 14 day boat ride leaving from Genova Italy and arriving in New York on May 13, 1950. Gunther's parents took low paying jobs and also went to school evenings to learn English. Gunther and his brother went to Concordia Lutheran Grammar School. Gunther attended Lane Tech High School in Chicago. He was an outstanding athlete and was a state runner on the school track team. He attended Northern Illinois University for one year.
Gunther joined the army in October of 1963 and received his honorable discharge in October of 1965. He moved back to Chicago where he learned the trade of tool and die maker, and this became his profession. Gunther met Susan at work in October of 1970, and they were married on March 3,1973. They moved into the house that they had built in Palatine, IL, right after they were married.
Gunther became a very proud father in October of 1976 when his son, Matthew, was born. He was totally dedicated to Matt and gave him a wonderful life. Matt had some medical problems, and Gunther was determined to do everything possible to make Matt's life as normal as possible. Matt decided to move to Las Vegas on his own, and Gunther and Susan followed after Gunther retired. Gunther would say that living in Sun City in Las Vegas was like being on vacation all of the time. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed golfing as much as possible. He waited a long time for it; but he got a hole in one on April 15, 2014!
Gunther is survived by his loving wife, Susan (Schmidt), and his brother, Horst (Marie), Voigt of Deer Park, IL, and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son, Matthew Edward Voigt, and his parents Johanna and Artur Voigt.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers memorials be made to Guiding Eyes for the Blind in Gunther's name
