On December 28, 2021, Gloria Fernandez, a beloved wife, mother, sister, friend and community leader passed away at the age of 74 at her home in Las Vegas surrounded by family and love after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease.
Gloria was born on January 6, 1947, in Monclova, Coahuila, Mexico, and was one of ten children. She immigrated to the United States in 1971, when she met and married her now husband, Antonio Fernandez. They both moved to Fairbanks, Alaska, to pursue the American dream and had and raised their four children there. Gloria was a beautician/hair stylist and owned a successful hair salon- Hair by Gloria, for 40 years.
Gloria had a strong faith in God, cherished her family, had many friends and loved life and to laugh (she was known for her infectious laugh). She was a social butterfly, had lots of energy and brightened up whatever room she was in.
Gloria was a hard worker, had high standards and strong values. She taught herself English and was extremely proud of her Mexican heritage. She was an amazing cook and loved sharing her delicious food with clients. She also loved music, dancing, Jazzercise, Zumba and elephants, as well as telling jokes.
Throughout her life, Gloria was a caregiver to many. She was very generous with helping family, friends, the community and strangers. She always thought of other people and giving back, especially to those less fortunate.
Gloria was a local leader and helped coordinate and host many community events. She, along with her husband, were among the founders (she was a former President) of the local non-profit- Latinos Unidos Del Norte, which advocates for Latino causes in the community. She also sponsored many community team sports and hosted several Rotary International foreign exchange students throughout the years. Her love and dedication to the Fairbanks community was recognized by the Alaska State Legislature, Alaska Governor, Fairbanks Mayor and Farthest North Girl Scouts Council with their “Woman of Distinction Award.”
Gloria is survived by her husband Antonio; children- Haydee, Ivette, Anthony, Alexis; grandchildren- Isabella, Gaia, Luca, Evan; sister- Maria; brothers- Jesus, Juan Antonio, Ricardo; and many, many other relatives who live around the United States and Mexico.
Visitation/Viewing followed by a Funeral Mass Service will be held on Saturday, January, 22, 2022, beginning at 12:00 p.m. PT at Holy Spirit Catholic Church- 5830 Mesa Park Drive, Las Vegas, Nevada.
