Gerald Ong Yu, 53, passed away on Sunday, July 7th, 2024 at Mountainview Hospital, Las Vegas, Nevada. He was born in Caloocan City, Manila, Philippines on May 9, 1971 to Elvira Alejandro Ong and Yu Bun Guan (Jimmy Young). In the summer of 1994, he became lifelong partners with Maria Franchette Carillo Arciaga and on April 10th, 2004, they had a son named Jin Francis Arciaga Yu.
In the early 1990s, with the help of Ong's family members, Gerald settled in San Diego after moving to the United States of America from the Philippines. He appreciated all the help given to him by his family and enjoyed spending fishing at Oceanside pier and bowling on half-off Thursdays with them. He met his lifelong partner Maria in San Diego and later moved to Las Vegas after their son was born.
After moving to Las Vegas, Gerald lived a full and beautiful life with his family. He had always been a jokester and made everyone smile. He is best known for loving the great outdoors. On top of fishing, Gerald co-led camping trips with his son and his son’s Boy Scout troops across the country from the deserts of Nevada to the cold forests of Alaska. Gerald also traveled with his family often, most recently in Hawaii. After a long day of hiking and sightseeing, he ensured a hot delicious meal would be ready within the hour. Unknown to many, Gerald was a phenomenal cook who often made tasty Chinese-Filipino dishes with a hefty kick of spice. His Chinese stir-fried lobster with jalapenos will be greatly missed. Gerald and Maria's clear love language was through food, as they frequently went on Costco food trips and cooked many, many meals together. You can still see after three decades how much they still love each other through their memorable photos on top of Mauna Kea as they lovingly embrace each other. In his spare time, he loved watching historical films or TV shows (mostly about WWII or K-dramas), golfing, tinkering with his cars, and playing with his dogs.
Most of all, Gerald Yu is a family man and always puts his family first. He is survived as a beloved member of the Yu & Ong family, consisting of his son Jin, his partner Maria, niece Juliana, mom Elvira, and sisters Vijim and Majelle.
On Saturday, July 20th, 2024, his family invites you to celebrate his life with us. You played a significant part in his life whether you are family or a friend. We will cherish all the memories of him and he will always be remembered fondly.
From the bottom of our hearts, thank you all for being a part of his life.
