George Long

George M. Long of Las Vegas, Nevada passed peacefully early in the morning on Saturday, December 24, 2022 just after his 89th birthday. George was born December 5, 1933 to E. Walter & Jean Bernard Long of Chicago IL.

George’s Father passed away when George was only 4 years old. George and his siblings moved into Marx Nathan children’s home where he met some life-long friends. After graduating from high school, he attended the University of Illinois at Navy Pier for 2 years & then went into the Marines. He married Anna in February 1955 and eventually graduated from Chicago Teachers College & earned a Masters in Education from DePaul University. He started his career as a teacher and started a family - having three children, Madelene, Thomas and Richard. Unsatisfied with teachers pay, he moved into the world of insurance. After a divorce, Florida was home for the next 15 years where he continued his insurance and other business ventures.

During this time, he found two new loves – Karen & cards. His first love was Karen from Cleveland, with whom he would be with for the rest of his life. This extended his family to include Karen’s daughters Jennifer and Lisa. The second was to stack the deck in his favor by utilizing his math and memory skills. George went “All In” as a Professional card player. A month didn’t go by when George wasn't off to Vegas (or Tahoe, the Bahamas, a cruise, or anywhere cards were being dealt). His VIP status created opportunity for Generous George to include family & friends on many of these excursions.

You can bet a move to Vegas was in the cards. He and Karen moved there in 2000, where he continued his business ventures and gaming tournaments until his final days.

George is survived by his life partner Karen Racutt; his sister Jacqueline Goldberg; children Madelene (Thomas) Walusek, Thomas (Nancy Eggen) Long & Richard (Hollie) Long; Karen’s daughters Jennifer (Clayton) Bell, Lisa (Morgan Grimshaw) Racutt; grandchildren Zachary; Derek & Jason; Alex & Owen; Jake & Samantha.

A Memorial Service for George will be held Wednesday January 4, 2023 from 12:30 PM to 2:00 PM at Christ the King Catholic Church, 4925 Torrey Pines Dr, Las Vegas, NV 89118. There will be a reception to follow.

A Memorial service will also be held in Chicago, IL. at a later date. Location and Date are TBD.
