Frank A Barker, 75, retired Captain from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department with 36 years’ service, died suddenly after a brief illness on January 23, 2017. He was a resident of Las Vegas since 1962. During his career, he rose through the ranks of the police department, where he had various assignments throughout the department including; instructor in the Training Academy, Commander of the Detective Bureau, Communications, Records, Fingerprint, Patrol. His last assignment was Captain in charge of Intelligence and Organized Crimes, Special Investigations, and the Gang Unit. He served on the board of directors at the Clark County Credit Union, and was a founding member of several organizations including; Nevada Child Seekers, Injured Police Officers Fund (IPOF), Brass Challenge (a foot race through the Valley of Fire), and the Baker to Vegas foot race. For many years he served as a Boy Scout Leader and adult instructor, earning his Silver Beaver award for making an impact on the lives of youth. He was an avid geocacher and remained active on the board of the Sheriff’s Protective Associate initially serving as President and then as the Retirement Liaison. He was an active member of Oakey Blvd Church of Christ. Frank and his wife enjoyed traveling throughout the United States, Mexico, and Canada in their motorhome. Ocean Cruises often took them to far away destinations. One of their favorite yearly destinations was a timeshare in Cabo San Lucas. He was born in Charleston, WV, the son of Glenna and Ted Wisnewski, both deceased, and was a graduate of Charleston High School. He attended West Virginia State before transferring to Long Beach State University. He leaves behind his wife, Gerri, of 45 years; two sons, Todd (Jeannette) of Long Beach, CA, Curtis (Dana) of Kyle, TX and a daughter, Kathleen Eagan of Reno, NV. He is also survived by his mother-in-law, Neva K. Barnhart, of Las Vegas, NV, his Aunt Gloria and Uncle Curtis Ford of Corpus Christi, TX, 9 grandchildren, and 1 great grandchild. Services will be Monday, January 30, 2017 at Oakey Church of Christ. There will be a Viewing from 1-3PM followed by Funeral services from 3-5PM. LVMPD Honor Guard will participate. Palm Mortuary is handling the arrangements. In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to either the Boy Scouts of America or the Injured Police Officers Fund.
