Ernest Reeva Scott Jr. was born on August 7, 1931, in Waco, Texas. He was the only child born to the union of Ernest Reeva Scott Sr. and Dessa Marjorie White Scott. The family later moved to Fort Worth, Texas, where he began his formal education and then they eventually settled in Los Angeles, California in 1946. Ernest was affectionally called "Scotty" by family and friends. Scotty attended LA Technical High School. Upon graduation he decided to join the United States Air Force. Scotty served during the Korean War as an aircraft mechanic working on such planes as the F4 Phantom II, F86 Sabre and others. He was awarded the Korean Service Medal with two Bronze Service Stars, United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. After four years of active service (1951-1955) Scotty was honorably discharged. He continued to serve his country in the reserve for several more years.
After the military, Scotty worked at the United States Post Office for several years. In 1964 he was employed by the Los Angeles Unified School District as a janitor and as a service mechanic working on the school district’s fleet of buses and service vehicles. Scotty retired from the Los Angeles Unified School District in 1991 after 27 years of faithful service. He was an active member of the Las Vegas, Nevada chapter of Blacks in Government and served as the assistant treasurer. Scotty was a dedicated and contributing member of society which began in the military, extended throughout his career as a civilian through his life work and career with the federal and local government.
On November 28, 1969, Scotty united in holy matrimony with the love of his life Laura Vickers. The family that he worked hard to provide for included two young sons from Laura’s previous marriage, Kevin Andy Anderson and Keith Alan Anderson, whom Scotty helped to raise. Scotty and Laura’s union was also blessed with their beautiful daughter Yvette Nicole. They were married for 30 years until his beautiful wife Laura transitioned and departed this life.
Scotty was a wealth of knowledge, had a great memory, and loved to share. His extended family knew him well and loved his company whenever he visited and attended family reunions. Interests and hobbies included travel, watching track and field events and playing golf. Scotty was a traditional and contemporary jazz enthusiast and enjoyed going to the Sedona Jazz Festival. He also loved to cook and his specialties included deep fried turkey and dry-rubbed, slow-cooked brisket as well as jalapeno cornbread. Scotty’s special cooking secrets were, seasoning and letting the food simmer.
Scotty could be laid-back and soft spoken at times plus a marvelous story-teller. He can make his friends and neighbors could count on, never said no, and went out of his way to help others. Because of Scotty’s handiness and ability to fix things he was called on often.
Ernest Reeva Scott Jr. departed this life on the afternoon of December 1, 2020, at Centennial Hills Hospital in Las Vegas, Nevada. He was proceeded in death by his parents, Ernest and Dessa Scott, wife Laura Scott, and son Kevin Anderson. To cherish his memory, he leaves behind in God’s loving care his daughter Yvette Nicole Scott-Butler and son-in-law Cordell Butler of Las Vegas, Nevada; son and daughter-in-law Keith and Pamela Anderson of Los Angeles, California; six grandchildren Mykael Anderson, Bryce Anderson, Kaelen Anderson, Kyra Anderson, Lauryn Anderson and Alora Scott-Butler; four great grandchildren Lazariha, Zakariha, Zamariha and Mykaela Anderson; Nieces and nephews he cherished, Sabrina Harris, Marcus Vickers, Renee Vickers, and Willie Vickers III; close family and cousins Elmo Neal, Louise and Tanya Echols, The Bruners, The Lowes, The Teals; and a host of relatives, close friends and associates who he loved and cared for dearly.
