Edward Reed Washington, 85, a professor at the College of Southern Nevada in Henderson passed away on April 29th, 2016, at St. Rose Dominican Hospital, Dignity Health. After a short stay in the hospital, he passed away in the presence of his wife and four children due to health complications.
He was born February 24th, 1931 in New Orleans, Louisiana to the late Edward Reed Washington and Catherine “Mamma Catherine” Lewis. He was married to Shirley Porter and was the oldest of three brothers and two sisters; Samuel, Lewis, William, Wilhelmina and Carol.
Edward attended Xavier University where he received both his Bachelor (1951) and his Master (1954) degrees in education, and after attending the University of Southern Mississippi, he received his Doctoral degree in Counseling Psychology in 1978.
His entire career was devoted to ensuring that all people, especially young people, with whom he had contact, were inspired to reach their highest potential on their journey to becoming the best that they could be.
Edward was adamant in providing educational opportunity for many others. Between 1976 and 1996, he became a principal of an elementary magnet school, taught graduate classes at Xavier University, was a high school guidance counselor sending over 50% of graduates to college; some of whom attended Dartmouth, Tulane University, Yale, Cornell, and West Point; was invited to serve on the 1st Scholarship Selection Committee of the National Scholars Program of the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, and was a counselor in the Upward Bound Program at Xavier University.
Fishing was his third love after his wife and children. His children were his life and his future was his grandchildren. As a matter of fact, not long before his passing, he told his grandchild, “Son, you are my future.”
His generosity was beyond comparison both with his time and resources. He is loved and will be sorely missed by all whose lives he touched.
