Edward John Brown passed away Sept. 7, 2012, comfortably at home, surrounded by family and friends, after a long valiant battle with pancreatic cancer. Born in Sacramento, Calif., to Edward and Pat Brown, Dec. 7, 1951, he was an only child. He is survived by his loving wife, Janie Brown; his two sons, Eddie "Jr" and Joseph; and his daughter, Jessica. Ed graduated from Rancho High School in 1970, where he excelled in track and cross country, earning a scholarship to UNLV for two years. He then transferred to the University of Nevada Reno and competed for two additional years. After completion of his bachelor's degree in criminal justice, Ed was hired onto the North Las Vegas Police Department in 1978 as a police officer. During his time as an officer, Ed held numerous positions and received many awards. In 1993, Ed was promoted to deputy chief of the NLV Detention Center, where he was instrumental in developing and hiring various employees, negotiating contracts with the U.S. Marshall Service and Immigration/Customs Enforcement to house federal inmates at the jail. He also constructed a Special Response Team and developed many of the policies and procedures for the detention center. In 1999, Ed left the jail and was rehired by the NLV Police Department as a detective until 2005b when he retired from NLV. Before retiring, he also held various positions within the NLV Police Officer's Associationb where he was able to represent many members in disciplinary matters and negotiate with the city union benefits and pay for the officers. Once retired from the city of North Las Vegas, he began a new career with the Cannery Resorts as head of their security department. He maintained his position with the Cannery until he passed. The Brown family is incredibly grateful to the Cannery for their generosity and commitment to Ed every day until his last breath. Ed was also strongly involved in youth soccer. He dedicated most of his life to helping local youth so they could be provided a successful future not just in soccer, but in life. When families could not afford the cost of not just soccer but many other things, such as food and education, he would use his own money to pay for those players supplies and not expect a penny in return. Ed did anything he could to help keep them playing sports and staying out of trouble. In lieu of flowers, donations are being accepted to help with funeral expenses. Let us keep Ed's family in our prayers and show our love and support. Expressions of sympathy may be sent to Janie Brown, P.O. Box 570334, Las Vegas, NV 89157. Visitation will be from 11 a.m.-1 p.m., Friday, Sept. 21, with services following, both at Palm Mortuary-Downtown, 1325 N. Main St.
