Dorothy Dean (Boyd) Hammack was born June 21, 1930, in Eustace, Texas, to Ola Loice and Lilburn Lynn Boyd. She went peacefully to her heavenly home on July 16, 2024, surrounded by her loving family. In life, she was always the life of the party and had many Dorothy-isms that made her a memorable and funny soul. She will be remembered most by her fried chicken, corn bread and gravy dinners she lovingly made for her family and anyone else visiting; “one more won’t matter.” Dorothy grew up as a young child in the depression of the 1930s, picking cotton with her 7 siblings and working farms for others as her dad followed the work near Salado, Eustace, Falby, Lampasas, Copperas Cove and Kempner, Texas. On May 22, 1948, she married Charles Green Hammack (CG). In 1959, they moved from Olathe, Kansas to Las Vegas. Dorothy drove with 5 kids and the family dog, as CG had already arrived to begin working. She was widowed at age 38 and raised her children as a single Mom. She worked as a waitress, hostess, and later, hotel cashier in the casino cage at the Flamingo Hotel. She was quick-witted and loved country music and country dancing. She parented with a firm but loving hand. You were in for it if she called you by your first and middle names. She had a dead-eye stare that would stop you in your tracks better than any paddle or swat. She protected her kids fiercely in all situations but made sure they were raised with respect and love for others. She respected hard work and had a zest for life. Dorothy retired in 1996 and moved to Pioche, NV, where she worked as a bartender and bookkeeper at “the resort” and became part of the volunteer fire department. She also built a chicken coup and fed the wild turkeys and rabbits that roamed her property. She was very giving of her time and limited resources as she opened her home to strangers when they were stranded by weather or had other hardships. When she began to lose her eyesight and became physically weakened, she moved back to Las Vegas in 2019 to be near her family. Dorothy is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, C.G., her granddaughter, Qwyn and six siblings. She is survived by her brother Kenneth W. Boyd (Nelda), her children Chuck, Danny (Denise), Peggy, Gayland (Jennifer), Jeff (Janice), Patti (Keith), Paula and Stephen, 17 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, please donate in Dorothy’s name to the Injured Police Officer’s Fund. Services will be held at Palm Mortuary, 7600 S. Eastern, Las Vegas, Nevada 89123 on Saturday, August 3, 2024, with visitation at 11:00 am, Service 12:00 pm, and Graveside 1:00 pm.
