Donna Rhea Carter, 69, of Las Vegas, passed away Saturday, Feb. 16, 2013, at Nathan Adelson Hospice. Mrs. Carter was born in Oklahoma and attended Oklahoma State University, where she majored in journalism and graduated in 1965. She was the editor of the university yearbook and director of Varsity Revue, the campus variety show. She served as president of Theta Sigma Phi, women's journalism fraternity, and was a member of Gamma Phi Beta sorority. Mrs. Carter moved to Nevada and worked at the Nevada Test Site following her graduation. She was married to Richard Carter in 1966. She enjoyed traveling, and the couple was employed in Hawaii, Libya, Iran and Dallas. They returned to Las Vegas in 1985, where she has lived since that time. Mrs. Carter was employed for several years by the Clark County School District as a substitute teacher and later a licensed teacher. She taught at Burkholder, Greenspun and K.O. Knudson middle schools before taking medical retirement. She was actively involved in volunteer work and spent more than 500 hours as a hospital volunteer. She was also a board member of Champions of Organ Sharing, a support group for those awaiting organ transplants. She often attended health fairs promoting organ transplantation. Mrs. Carter had been wait-listed for liver replacement for 13 years at the time of her death. She is survived by one son, Kevin Carter and his wife, Sharee, of Boise, Idaho; one daughter, Jenna Carter of Henderson; two granddaughters, Jorden Rhea Carter and Jade Stirling of Boise; one sister, Anita Kay Housley of Henderson; a nephew, Richard Housley and his wife, Angela; a niece, Sara Brown and her husband, Scot; and three grandnephews. Visitation will be 3-7 p.m., Friday, Feb. 22. Services will be at 9:30 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 23, both at Palm Mortuary, 7600 S. Eastern Ave. Burial will follow at Palm Valley View Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Nathan Adelson Hospice Foundation or to the Nevada Donor Network in her memory.
