He joined the US Air Force after completing high school and honorably served from June 1950 until January 1955. After his military service he began a long career as a telecommunications professional and manager. In 1996 he retired from Siemens.
In 1961, he met Reberta (Fludd) Ellis, and they wed in 1962. Soon after they had two children, Donald (Jr.), and Pilar. Due to Don's job, the family moved from New York to New Jersey, where they raised their children and enjoyed regular fishing outings and family activities. In addition they returned often to New York to visit with his parents and other family members and friends.
In 1996, Don and his wife relocated from Tinton Falls, NJ to Las Vegas NV. He enjoyed his passion fishing which he did often on his boat at Lake Mead. Don particularly enjoyed many fishing and boating adventures at Lake Mead and Lake Havasu with his best friend, Brian Roland. He also enjoyed his two part-time jobs. He worked at Dry Dock Boat Sales selling boats and delivering them on the Lake to their new owners. He thoroughly enjoyed serving as a crossing guard. He truly loved working with the elementary school children and their parents. In 2006, Don was fortunate enough to meet Charlene Gilllespie, who was a godsend to both he and his family. Her love and support ensured his later years were filled with companionship and joy.
Don was predeceased by his brother, Thomas Ellis, and sister Lena (Ellis) Adams. He is survived by his partner, Charlene Gillespie; his ex-wife, Reberta Ellis; and his children, Donald and Pilar.
