He was born May 17, 1939 in Sandusky, Ohio, to Richard and Dorothy Grob.
After attending the United States Air Force Academy, Dick joined both the Police and Sheriff's Academies. His career in law enforcement went on to span more than 10 years and two states (Toledo, Ohio and Palm Springs, California), where he worked as a police officer and sergeant of Vice and Narcotics – some of which involved him going undercover. While working with the Palm Springs Police Department in 1967, Dick provided security for Elvis Presley – a chance event which led to Dick’s friendship with Elvis until his passing in 1977; this friendship evolved into a fulltime position as his Chief of Security. Dick continued as Director of Estate Operations at Graceland for two more years, and would go on to share his experiences with Elvis through panels and books, which took him all over the world. After Graceland, Dick moved to the Los Angeles, California area and had an illustrious career, including the starting-up and selling of multiple successful businesses. He eventually went to work for a Fortune 500 company where he attained a TOP SECRET clearance for a number of projects at Vandenberg Air Force Base and the Nevada Nuclear Test Site. After that, Dick continued into several other endeavors, including the founding of a publishing company and the opening of several medical offices.
Dick is survived by his wife Melissa Grob; his daughter Wendy and her husband Mark Polley; his daughter Diana Grob; his son Richard and his wife Christl Grob; and his eight grandchildren Lindsey, Sean, Erica, Patrick, Ryan, Dana, Andrew, and Lucas.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to the “Dick Grob TCB Memorial Endowment Fund” at Camp Sunshine in Casco, Maine – a nonprofit which Dick avidly supported. Camp Sunshine is a retreat for children facing life-threatening illnesses and their families, providing support and recreational activities to promote hope and joy; this camp is available year-round and offered to these families free of charge. The “Dick Grob TCB Memorial Endowment Fund” will sponsor families to attend this camp every year, in perpetuity.
