Miss you as if it was yesterday hope you are having a great time up there in heaven make sure you save me a seat

i attended the University of Nebraska when David played football at UNL.  He lived on the floor above me and I recall one day he was in my room visiting my roommate as I recall.  For being the super cool quarterback, he was gracious in a way I remember 40+ years later.  As i recall too, he and a friend (allegedly) set fire to a broom and stuck it under the smoke detector, so in the middle of the night we all had to get out of bed and evacuate the dorm until the fire department could clear the building.  Fond memory ...  What a loss ...

  I have to say I am deeply saddened to hear about David Humm’s passing. I also attended our Lady of Las Vegas school with David, and I fondly remember  him as that little boy with a football always in his hand. There was something special about David even at that young age you just knew  that he was going somewhere with that football glued to his hands. LOL., And he did. He took it to a whole new level,  but I have to say more importantly then his football career was his kind heart and his integrity that’s what will be missed. Those qualities are very hard to find anymore. My condolences  to David’s family. God bless you for having that wonderful person in your life. 





David Humm is a lasting fixture in the memories of my grade school and high school years, and even beyond into my young adult years.  In reading the many memories of friends and family over the last week or so, it brings joy to know that David touched so many lives in amazing and substantial ways.  Several of the notes mentioned that David often offered his help to his friends in any way he could…just to give him a call and let him know how he could help.  I remember him saying the same to me at our 40th high school reunion.  I checked my senior yearbook this week, and there it was again in his yearbook autograph to me.  Truly a core belief of a selfless man.  I pray that while we grieve the loss of a man who impacted the lives of so many and will be greatly missed, that we also find peace in knowing that the difficult suffering that marked so many years is over.  And may God richly bless his family, those who know him and love him the most, during this difficult time.

I never met David. I did work for his sister Lori  back in the 80's and she was very proud of him. That is why I knew who he was when I heard of his passing on the news. My deepest sympathy to all who loved him

I met Hummer through his brother Tom back in 1994. Tom knew my love of the Raiders and introduced us. We became fast friends and used to chat often. David was such an inspiration and bright light in my life. He enabled me to aspire to actually do charity work with the Raiders, he sent me to training camp and laughed when I told him the full back taught me “how to throw my shoulder in it” and run a play to show me! He was the most passionate, loving person I have ever had the privilege of knowing. Thank you David, you mean the world to me and I will forever remember your love and kindness. God bless you!!

I remember going to the Nebraska/UCLA game @ the Colosseum in 1971 with my Dad and 2 friends from Gorman! Seeing David quarterback was a total thrill. I've been a lifelong 49er fan, but once David joined the Raiders, they were a 2nd favorite! I'm so glad I was able to have a wonderful conversation with him at Bobby Fechser's 60th b-day celebration. RIP David, you will be missed by so many!

"Can Dave and Tom come out and play?"  We, the youngsters in the neighborhood, asked Mr. or Mrs. Humm and, often, Dave and Tom would do so.  I fondly remember playing football in the street, basketball on their side yard, or a game of pickle (Dave and Tom would man the bases and throw the baseball back and forth while we ran from base to base and hoped not to be hit by the ball).  During these many childhood games Dave taught me the lifelong values of teamwork, determination and putting others first.     

Dave cast a large and enduring shadow beyond the adoring youngsters in our childhood neighborhood.  Later, whenever we talked, he made me feel important.  Regardless of the circumstances, he was upbeat about life and the gifts he received.  His generosity was matched by his genuineness.  His humbleness reflected his servant's heart.  His friendship had no boundaries.     

I pray Tom, Cathy, Lori, Courtney, and the entire Humm family, will find relief from their loss in the many wonderful experiences they shared with Dave, the countless friends he so deeply touched, and the remarkable memories of such an incredible man.  Dave always made a point of telling me how he loved me before our conversations ended.  I shared the same sentiment then and now.

David and I both had size 13 feet in the 4th grade, which established our friendship on firm ground. Our fathers and Holly Berry's worked together and had huge respect for one another, which they shared with their kids. I followed them into Gaming which took me away from Vegas coincidently whenever we've had a class reunion. Sorry I missed them. 
Returning from one such assignment in Mississippi, I started coaching boys/girls,  (daughter Sarah) basketball at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton. When we played Our Lady of Las Vegas, David got out of his car, wheelchair in tow. We hugged like the brothers we'd always been. After the game, I met Courtney and introduced David to Sarah. One week later he sent her autographed photos with a personal letter telling her about us with words of love and encouragement. I loved the man, his brother Tommy and the whole family. Still do.

Dave, I won't be there to help send you off, but I'll never forget the friendship and kindness you showed me as a classmate and a one-year football player at our high school. You graciously shared your inspiring story for my book, Hope is a Funny Thing. Perhaps my best memories were listening to your recruiting stories and your trips around the country, searching for a college to play for. If I can get right with the Lord, I might see you some day. We'll toss the ball around. 

Dave was a classmate at Our Lady of Las Vegas  starting in the 5th grade. Then, at Gorman High School , until I moved out of state our senior year. It was tough leaving the kids I grew up with. I loved going to the Friday night games, I loved the tightness and the spirit of our class, I appreciated David's humility, and generosity, and  his amazing work ethic.  He was the heart and soul of that class. What a joy to be at those games  and watching David and Tommy operating  like they could read each other's minds. Courtney, you are so lucky that he chose you and he will be guiding you.  Tommy, you could not have been a better brother.  My thoughts  go out to all of his family and friends. David, you can now rest in peace.

Dave and I were classmates beginning in the 4th grade at OLLV and through graduation from Bishop Gorman in 1970.  From recess football and baseball games (and detention) at OLLV to Friday night Gorman games under the lights, Dave's huge athletic talents were never superseded by his genuine friendship and compassion  for others. Even during the glory years of Cornhusker football and Raider super bowls, Dave always remembered his friends and remained that same humbled kid that I knew from school. I am amazed to this day that even when his physical fortunes changed, he never changed, Happy, fearless, humble, driven, and a true friend is how I remember Dave Humm.  Happy birthday Dave. Gone but never forgotten.
God now has that left handed hurler he's been needing for his heavenly team. 

I'm heartbroken by this loss, and send my deepest condolences to Tom, Cathy, Lori, and Courtney. I met Dave when he was 11 years old. The Humms had just moved into the neighborhood. I was 8, and a girl, but he always treated me as an equal. I learned so much from him over the years -- most importantly: play hard, play to win, but never cheat; be truthful, be honest, and be considerate. He taught me all of those things. And so much more. As time went by, we kept in touch via phone calls, emails, the occasional visit. When we'd connect, it was if time had never passed. In many ways, it hadn't. He was always my hero. In football, and in life. I adored him and looked up to him. So, happy birthday, Dave. I will miss you and think of you often, always with undying love.

I met Hummer online a number of years ago when I asked him for an autographed picture, I think he sent 9 and he wrote a letter about himself. He wrote down his phone number for me to call him, which I did. He was so easy to talk to , which I really appreciated. We continued private messaging one another pretty much every day until he had to go to the hospital. We talked about his life as a Husker and Raider, what players pulled on him, how many times he'd been cut from teams, he always said in his years after playing, he loved watching grown men hit each other in the game of football. You were not to contact him when there was a football game on. I felt so proud of him, the strength he had getting through his pain and the love he had for his daughter Courtney. He used to say life was good and he wanted to live to be 100. Rest in Peace, David Humm, I'll never forget you.   Patsy

I went to school with Dave from the 6th grade on.  But as often the case of busy lives and long distances our only contacts came at Gorman class reunions. 
However in a strange quirk of fate, (my sister trying to get ahold of his sister for an Our  Lady  of Las Vegas reunion), we began talking and emailing weekly. 
Even though I knew  he was in incredible pain, he never complained and was eternally optimistic.  He had that rare gift too of always making you feel like you were the most important person in his life. 
I could go on at length about what a fantastic guy he was, but I wanted to pass on a message to his daughter Courtney. (Every conversation or message shared always included an update and a mention of his love for you. )
You were his everything. He was so proud of you and the beautiful young lady you had become.  I really wanted to pass that on, with the thought that he will live on through you, and will always watch out for you from heaven.  
(And Tommy, likewise. Few will know the countless things you did to make his life easier and better, but know he was forever grateful)

Hummer was a wonderful man and a great friend.  He showed us strength in many ways. It is a great honor to be able to call him a friend and he touched so many lives. Thoughts prayers and hugs to his family. He will always remain in our hearts. The photo I chose is the reverse side of his Cornhusker QB autograph photo.  It's some of his college day sketches. Apparently he didnt know he was doodling on the back of a Christmas gift. To me it's priceless just like his friendship..

 I first met David at KLUC in 1984 while working for his brother Tom.  I could not believe a Las Vegas legend, and 2 time super bowl champion would be such a kind, caring, man. It was always about how he could help others and never about himself. David was an angel on Earth and in heaven. I loved his stories of Mr. Davis and talking football with him. His heart is unmatched by anyone. I love you, Hummer! David is the father, neighbor, friend, and human being we should all aspire to be. He is the example for all to follow.  My heart goes out to his daughter Courtney, brother Tom, the entire Humm family, Raider nation, and David’s fans worldwide.  

I became aware of David  in 1970 when he came to Nebraska to play football. He was my hero. Then in September 2012 I was shocked when he called me. We had a wonderful friendship that lasted 6 1/2 years. He was the kindest man and had a huge loving heart. I will miss our nightly phone calls. I love you Dave.  You are no longer hurting. RIP. Thoughts and prayers to Courtney and her family.

 The world has lost the sunshine of David‘s personality and smile. But the heavens have gained an angel who is filled with compassion, empathy and love.  

 David has been a good friend to so many people. I have so many incredible memories of time spent with him and I will miss those times. I’ll miss hearing him laugh on the phone when we talk and definitely miss our email jokes. 

 Bob and I send our hearts and prayers to the family. We know the pain of losing a loved one but also know the relief knowing our loved one is out of pain. 

 Rest in peace dear David. You will always be loved. 

Dave's grandmother and my grandmother were sisters.  Living in West Texas all my life it was a long shot for distant cousins to visit.  I do remember the family and express my deepest condolences and prayers for this great man.  I lost my oldest sister , Anne Kennedy, to Multiple Sclerosis in 2004. I want to share how much joy this young man brought to the state of NEBRASKA on sat afternoons  leading our beloved CORNHUSKERS to many victorys during DAVE HUMMS years at NU 72-76.Dave will always be known to CORNHUSKER fans as "DAVE THE DEALER" a nickname Husker play by play  radio legend Lyle Bremser gave him in 72.We LOVE YOU DAVE!RIP GO BIG RED!
