It is with incredible sadness that we announce the passing of David Dunn. David passed away unexpectedly on May 25, one day before his 82nd birthday.
David grew up in Ferndale, Michigan, along with his three brothers, Bob, Jim, and Bill, who all preceded him in death, and his sister, Elizabeth (Beth). He was raised by his parents, Jim and Hester and would eventually follow in his father's footsteps to become a police officer. David joined the Air Force shortly after graduation and was stationed in Alaska. There he began corresponding with his friend's wife's sister, Penny, whom he would later marry. They would go on to have two children, Cyndie and Michael. In 1968, after serving a few years on the Ferndale Police Department, the family moved to Las Vegas where Dave would first serve with the Clark County Sheriff's Department. In 1969, when the LVMPD was formed, Dave continued his work helping and serving the citizens of Las Vegas. Later, David would become a detective, working in both the juvenile and sexual assault divisions. Dave also became a board member on the Sheriff's Protective Association (SPA) and enjoyed helping organize the yearly picnics and Christmas parties. David made many life-long friends through his work and mentored many officers and detectives along the way. His true passion was helping children. In 2003, David retired from LVMPD after 35 years of service. After retirement, he enjoyed representing the SPA at the retirements of his peers.
In his free time, David loved hunting, reading, framing pictures, drinking Coors Light, watching baseball, cheering on the Vegas Golden Knights and the Las Vegas Raiders. He especially loved spending time with his family and took great pride in being Grampie to his grandson, Cayden, Uncle Dave to his many nieces and nephews, as well as a wonderful brother, and an incredible dad.
His family invites you to celebrate his life on Saturday, June 24th at 10:00 a.m. at the Palm Cheyenne Mortuary 7400 West Cheyenne Avenue.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you consider making a donation to the LVMPD Injured Police Officers Fund.
