She was born in Tacoma, Washington on Christmas Eve of 1936. Her parents had six children and with Darlene being the only girl, her responsibility was to bake for the family. Who knew this chore would someday be something that she not only enjoyed but shined at. Later in life, family, friends, and even neighbors would buy her Lemon Meringue, Strawberry, Pecan, and Rhubarb pies.
In her early 20’s, Darlene met and married Howard W. Larson and together they started a family. They had the traditional marriage, Howard worked as a union plumber and Darlene cared for the home and children.
When her children were grown, Darlene missed having a busy household so she started babysitting. Friends and family quickly noticed that the children called Darlene “Grandma Honey”, but they were unsure why. One day Howard shouted out “Honey” to Darlene and that’s when they realized the children thought “Honey” was her name. Darlene babysat for many years and even when she moved to Wrightwood and the children she cared for had grown, they would often visit her or call her as if she was truly their Grandma Honey.
Preceding her in death was her husband Howard and her son Gary.
Darlene is survived by her son Kirk; daughter-in-law Brenda; daughter Rhonda; and grandchildren, Christina, April, Jami, Crystal, Joy, Kyle, Chelsea, Dylan, and Maverick; as well as six great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 13, 2017 at Palm Eastern Mortuary.
