Dallas Mefford began attending the First Pentecostal Church in Bakersfield at the age of ten. His Pastor was Rev. I.H. Terry. He was 13 when he received the infilling of the Holy Ghost and was baptized in Jesus name. Within the next eleven years he felt the call to preach and became Bro. Terry’s assistant pastor at age twenty-four. He also met and fell in love with Sis. Ethel Stevens. They were married on June 20, 1953. Bro. Mefford supported his new bride as a sheet metal union journeyman.
A Las Vegas resident 59 years, Bro. Dallas Mefford was Founder and Pastor Emeritus of the Apostolic Church of Las Vegas. He moved to Las Vegas from Bakersfield, California in 1962 with his wife Ethel, daughters Gwen (age 8) and Sharon (age 5). Their son Mark was born in Las Vegas.
Bro. Mefford worked as a journeyman and master craftsman in the Sheetmetal Union Local 88 while starting a church in the basement of his home with one other family. The fledgling congregation grew and moved to a small church building on 3rd street, then to a store front on Nellis Boulevard. Meanwhile two and a half acres on Lindell Road was purchased for the purpose of constructing a small church building. In September 1968 the “Little Blue Building” held its first services.
In 1973, the vision to add to the structure in the future came to fruition. Bro. Mefford announced plans for a new 600 seat sanctuary to be added on to the “Little Blue Building”. He did the architectural designs and drawings for the current 4,900 sq. ft. sanctuary on the Lindell property. First services were held in 1978.
Bro. Mefford was an avid outdoorsman and loved hunting, hiking, fishing and horseback riding. Dallas and Ethel Mefford enjoyed traveling at home and abroad. They cherished times with their children and grandchildren on camping trips to Mt. Charleston (Nevada) and Zion National Park (Utah), get-a-ways to the coast in California, and road trips in their motor home.
With the help and support of Sis. Ethel Mefford’s dauntless energies and talents, Bro. Mefford labored in the word and Apostolic doctrines for 34 years. He retired in 1996. With an anointed exchange of leadership, his son-in-law, Bro. Steve Stoltzfus, became Pastor.
Dallas Ray Mefford was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Ethel Faith Mefford, father Everett Mefford, mother Jewell Mefford, and brother Glenn Mefford. He is survived by daughter Gwen, and her husband Rev. John Ickes; daughter Sharon, and her husband Rev. Steve Stoltzfus; son Mark and his wife Heather; 5 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandson; all of Las Vegas. He is also survived by sister Shirley King and sister Vivian Allard and several nephews and nieces.
