Charles Liu ( 劉廣恆 ) passed away peacefully in Las Vegas, Nevada on November 8, 2018. Born on September 27, 1927 to S. Y. Liu and May Lee in Shanghai, China, Charles moved to Los Angeles in 1950 where he earned his bachelor’s degree in accounting from UCLA. As a certified public accountant, he started his own firm in Los Angeles and led it for over four decades before retiring and moving to Las Vegas in 1999.
In 1958 Charles married his soul mate, Grace Wong, who passed away in 2009. As the oldest sibling in the Liu family, he remained committed to upholding and preserving its legacy throughout his long life. Following the footsteps of his father -- an early member of Phi Lambda, the Chinese fraternity established in 1919 at Columbia University -- Charles became one of the organization’s most loyal and devoted brothers, serving in both its Los Angeles and Las Vegas chapters, the latter of which he helped to establish.
As anyone who knew him is well aware, Charles was a passionate lifelong fan of the UCLA basketball and football teams. For decades, he eagerly shared his memories of Coach John Wooden and the UCLA Bruins that won ten NCAA championships from 1964-1975, including seven straight from 1967-1973.
Charles is survived by four siblings, Lena, Diana, John and James; a nephew, Mark and nieces, Andrea, Jennifer and Amy. A funeral service will be held at Palm South Jones Mortuary, 1600 S. Jones Blvd., Las Vegas on Saturday, November 17, 2018, commencing at 11:00 AM.
