Charles (Chuck) H. Collingwood, a retired US Army soldier and a retired Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Officer passed away unexpectedly on June 29, 2018 surrounded by family and friends at Centennial Hospital after a brief illness. Chuck was born in Indianapolis, Indiana on August 18, 1949 and was 68 years young at the time of his death.
Chuck grew up on a dairy farm where he gained strong work ethics before joining the US Army at the age of 18. He served with the 82nd Airborne Infantry Unit and completed an 18 month tour in Vietnam. He returned from Vietnam after being blown up with a grenade launcher and almost losing his eye. He earned a purple heart and returned to Fort Bragg, North Carolina where he decided to join the parachute club and become a jumper. He was interviewed by the 1st Sargent of the US Army Parachute Team (Golden Knights) who offered him an opportunity to jump and train with the team. He found he had a natural affinity for the sport and became a national and world champion many times over. After spending eight years with the Golden Knights, he was ready to pursue other aspects of the Army. He went through Special Forces Selection, earning his green beret. After a short few months, he was recruited to go through Delta Force selection. He served eight years there developing High Altitude High Opening/High Altitude/Low Opening (HAHO/HALO) program which is still in use today. Chuck was also a key proponent in the unit’s weapons training. He retired from the military in August 1987 after 20 years and was recruited to the Nevada Test Site with the Department of Energy to be a supervisor of training. After vesting with the Test Site, he felt called to join the LVMPD. Chuck was class leader of his academy and went on to serve in patrol, Gang Unit and with SWAT.
Chuck is survived by his wife Deborah (Debbe) and their three children: Tuesday Weston (husband Russ), Jonathan Collingwood (wife Adriana) and Elizabeth Quintero (husband Fredy). He was preceded in death by his mother, Dorthy Mae Collingwood, father, Howard Joseph Collingwood and his grandson Ian Wendland. He also leaves behind a sister, Nancy Walker (husband Terry) and brother Norman (wife Cathy), nieces and nephews and five grandkids and countless friends who called him brother. Chuck will be missed tremendously by all who knew him.
Chuck enjoyed shooting, skydiving and his three dogs! But most of all he enjoyed hanging out with his family and traveling with his wife now that he was retired.
Services will be held at Canyon Ridge Church, 6200 West Lone Mountain, Las Vegas, NV at 2:00 pm. Viewing will begin at 12:00 noon.
