Catherine Edith Munoz Sablan Cruz was both in Agana, Guam on February 4th, 1950 to Isabel Munoz and Enrique Benevente Sablan. She was the middle child out of 9 siblings (two older brothers and 6 sisters).
Cathy grew up in Toto, Guam and loved being with her family. She was very adventurous and often tagged along with her father who was a scout master and her brothers. They often referred ti her as their little mascot. She would also spend time with her sisters and mom. There were occasions when she would be sneaky and get into trouble because she would rather play than do her chores when her parents were out. And, she loved playing sports, especially volleyball, softball, bowling and darts. Later in life, while in England, Cathy even earned an opportunity to play in a tournament partnered with a professional dart player.
Cathy briefly attended Our Lady Academy School where her mom worked and then George Washington High School. She was even selected to Crown the Blessed Mother which she felt was a very big honor. As she grew older, Cathy had a gentle and caring spirit and was often know as a peacekeeper. Because of this she had an interest in being a nurse and/or teacher and briefly attended nursing school. She went on to follow her passion and love for children and went on to teach catechism and Sunday School classes.
Cathy met her husband, Alvin Sudo Cruz from Yona, Guam and was swept off her feet. After briefly dating, he proposed after he returned from the Vietnam War , and they were married at the cathedral in Agana, Guam. Alvin continued to serve his country in the US Air Force which allowed them to travel and live in many places such as England, Spain, Okinawa and several states in the US. They would share almost 53 blessed years together until Alvin’s passing just a month ago on September 25, 2023.
Cathy loved family and longed for children. They had three beautiful daughters, Christina Marie, Anita June and Natalie Joy. And they also had fuvr grandchildren: Angel-Cathleen, Nissa Nayko, Caeli-Junae, Nicholas and Chaya-Janine and was affectionately known as Nana. She also took in many family and friends into their home when someone needed a place to stay or to get in their feet. She never had any sons of her own, and was joyous when her daughters welcomed the men in their lives home to the family. Joe and Chris brought a new-founded joy to her life as they often playfully competed for her affection and laughter.
Cathy’s other interests and hobbies were music and singing. Her favorite song was “You Are My Sunshine”. She also loved puzzles and games and watching Korean soap operas on Netflix. She also loved cooking and baking. She was infamous for her Latiya and fried chicken.
Cathy’s spirit was often innocent and sensitive. She just wanted everyone to be happy. She loved to laugh!! She loved life, adored her husband and family. She struggled with her health over the past years and missed her husband Alvin tremendously when he passed recently. Now she is reunited with her forever love in light, love, and eternal peace. She will forever be missed and love by all.
THE BROKEN CHAIN
We little knew that day, God was going to call your name.
In life we loved you dearly, In death, we do the same.
It broke our hearts to lose you, You did not go alone.
For part of us went with you, The day God called you home.
You left us peaceful memories, Your love is still our guide.
And although we cannot see you, You are always at our side.
Our family chain is broken, And nothing seems the same.
But as God calls us one by one, The chain will link again.
