Cal J. “Jack” Potter, Jr., age 94, passed away on Saturday, September 5, 2020. Jack was born on October 7, 1925, in Bisbee, AZ to California J. Potter and Annie Leona Davis Potter. He had an older brother, Charles Arthur Potter.
When Jack was a young child, his family moved to Chloride, AZ and then to Kingman, AZ where Jack attended secondary school before enlisting in the US Navy at the age of 17. Jack served at duty stations in San Diego, CA and Norfolk, VA, and aboard the USS Chevalier DD-805. He also attended EM School at the University of Minnesota and EIC School in Washington, DC. He was proud of his status as a WWII Veteran, and shared many compelling stories with his family and friends. After being honorably discharged from the Navy, Jack attended Northern Arizona University.
In 1951, Jack married Enith Jewell Johnson, and they moved to Phoenix, AZ, where Jack worked as an electrician and he and Jewell bought their first home. They were admirable parents who raised two kind and successful children: Rebecca Potter, M.D. and Cal J. Potter, III, Esq. During their years in Phoenix, the family were members of Mount of Olives Lutheran Church. Jewell predeceased Jack in 2006, and Cal, III, predeceased Jack in 2017.
In 1977, Jack and Jewell moved to Las Vegas, NV, where Jack worked at Dynalectric until his retirement. Jack’s membership in IBEW Local 357 was another source of joy and pride for Jack. For 42 years, Jack was an active member of the community-driven Reformation Lutheran Church in Las Vegas. Jack was a 75-year member of the Kingman, AZ Benevolent Protective Order of Elks, which included his teen years as a member of their junior program, the Antlers.
Jack’s favorite pastimes were golfing, bowling, reading, teaching mathematics to his grandchildren, and loving and indulging his grandchildren and, especially, his great-grandchildren.
Jack is survived by his daughter, Rebecca aka Becky of Tucson, AZ; his daughter-in-law, Linda Potter of Las Vegas, NV; his grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Allison, and Cal, IV aka CJ (Jenna) and their daughter Carson of Las Vegas; Bethany Potter Evans (Durham) and their son Jarrah of Kallista VIC Australia; and Brendan Torrance (Ruth) and their son Luke of Alexandria, VA. He also leaves behind a large extended family, especially in Arizona.
