Her parents, and siblings -- brothers Thomas Sr., Edwin Samuel “Pete”, LeRoy, Jr., and Robert (infant), and Sisters: Joyce, Deloris, and Maurene all preceded her in death.
At age 9, she left Yoakum to live with an aunt in Orange, Texas (Aunt Craddie White). She was a graduate of Texas Southern University and completed her Masters’ degree program at Azusa Pacific College in California in August of 1978. As an inspirational educator, she taught in public schools in Texas and California for 35 years. Her teaching skills attracted student teachers from UCLA, USC, Cal State LA, and Long Beach State University.
One of her students from the Compton School Dist. participated in the National Spelling Bee contest. Her passion for student achievement prompted enriching experiences for her students, including a visit by her class to the state capital in Sacramento, and among other educational trips, a boat ride to Catalina Island. A poem written by her husband, Lloyd was recited to the Compton School District Board of Directors. Shekinah was involved in her church community- seemingly a follow-up of her earlier years with her Aunt Craddie White, who was married to a Methodist minister.
She taught in the Youth Church in Long Beach, California read to and counseled youth in El Centro, California, a facility for abused children. She facilitated workshops and memorial services. As a Science of Mind Practitioner, she assisted in classes and workshops. In Denver Colorado, she was an associate in the Guidance Center at Mile High Church.
Additionally, she also initiated the formation and facilitation of a Woman’s group in Colorado which was endearing to her. She adored her pet dogs: George, Glow, another George, and Miss Pearl who were German shepherds, Siberian husky, and Basenji Jack Russell breeds.
Shekinah was full of Love and Daily motivation. Frequently, she called family members to say-“Journey High- God’s got you – He’s got All of Us”!
She leaves to cherish her memory, her loving husband of 51 years Dr. Lloyd George Barrett where they celebrated in their Life, Love, and Ministry in serving others through the family, school systems, Ministry, and life. Two Sisters, Jessie Graham (James) of Inglewood, CA, and Florence “Tiny” (Maico) Giles of Houston, TX, and a great host of in-laws, relatives, nieces, and nephews that she loved and prayed for daily. Two nephews had the privilege of living with them whom they enjoyed mentoring, which was Gerald Parks and Raoul Williams. “Shekinah leaves her Legacy of Love” to all whom she encountered.
