Arthur “Art” Marshall, 93, of Las Vegas, died on Monday, August 7, 2023. He was born September 4, 1929 to Anna and Leo Moskowitz in Cleveland, Ohio, where he grew up surrounded by his close cousins, who were like siblings to him. He was a first generation American, as his parents were immigrants from Russia and Ukraine. Art met and married Jayn Saltzman in 1953. They moved to Las Vegas in 1955 to be with Jayn’s parents, Abe and Sara Saltzman, and sister and brother-in-law, Malvene and Herb Rowe.
Art worked with Abe in a little dress shop, Sara’s of Las Vegas, and was later joined by Herb Rouso and his sister Estelle Rousso. Art and Herb worked very hard and soon had three Sara’s stores on the Strip. In 1962, they opened their first hotel shop at the Sahara, which was the beginning of the Marshall-Rousso stores that still operate today in Las Vegas and in airports across the country.
Art loved Las Vegas and served on many charitable committees and boards, including the Jewish Federation of Las Vegas and the Anti-Defamation League. In 1980, his was appointed to the PERS Board by Governor Robert List.
Always the entrepreneur, Art indulged his passion for cars and in 1975 became the first Rolls Royce dealer in Las Vegas. In 1979, he sold the dealership to his friend Jerry Cutter.
His career in banking began in the mid-1980s while first serving on the Board of Directors of Nevada State Bank, then in 1997 as Chairman of BankWest of Nevada, now Bank of Nevada. He remained Chairman Emeritus until 2018.
In the beginning of 1997, Art was appointed to the Nevada Gaming Commission and proudly served until 2010. In 2010 he wrote his book, The Marshall Plan. In 2014 he married Bonnie Saunders.
Arthur is predeceased by his parents; loving wife, Jayn; and his beloved granddaughter, Dana. He is survived by his wife Bonnie; daughter, Cari Marshall; son, Todd Marshall (Sandra); granddaughters, Jessica Marshall (Jack Womack) and Alexis Marshall Abelson (Joshua Abelson); great-granddaughter, Celine Marshall Abelson; great-grandson, Leo Marshall Abelson; and Bonnie’s family, Justin Saunders (Lauren), Courtney Saunders; Corbin Saunders (Kate), and Michelle Saunders.
Art was a genuine Las Vegas legend and will be sorely missed by his loving family and friends in this community. He leaves a legacy of love, integrity and kindness.
Funeral services will be held at 9:30AM on Thursday August 10, 2023 at Congregation Ner Tamid, 55 N. Valle Verde, Henderson, NV 89074. Burial will follow at King David Memorial Cemetery, 2697 E. Eldorado Lane, Las Vegas, NV 89120. King David Memorial Chapel handled the arrangements.
