Alfred Joseph Gallant of Las Vegas, Nevada passed away on May 28, 2020 at the age of 79. “Big Al”, as friends and family knew him, was a devoted husband, father and Papa to his grandchildren. In addition to his own children, he was a mentor and father figure to countless other nephews, nieces and family friends whom he treated as if they were his own. He was proud of many things he had accomplished in his life, but nothing made him prouder than his family.
Al was born in Providence, Rhode Island on July 10, 1940 to Arthur and Cordelia (Charbonneau) Gallant. The middle child of three sons, he enlisted in the United States Air Force the very day he became eligible in order to help support his family. From that day forward, he lived a life of service; first to his parents, then to our country and lastly to his wife and children.
After serving in the military, Al was a founding partner in Delivery Service Incorporated, a business he formed with lifelong friends. He met and fell in love with Maureen Farrell and they married in Point Judith, Rhode Island in 1979. Together they raised a beautiful family of 9 children and 21 grandchildren.
In 1983, Al moved his family out west to Las Vegas, Nevada. He began a career at Roadway Express where he was known as their #1 man. He was a union steward for Teamsters Local 631 and was very proud of his achievement of over 2 million safe driving miles. He retired from Roadway in 2007 and spent the last 12 summers with his wife Maureen at their beach house at Roy Carpenter's Beach, Matunuck, Rhode Island. Some of the best moments of his life were spent on his back deck, enjoying a cold beer in the salt air surrounded by friends and family. The beach house was open to any and all who wanted to visit and they showed up in droves. Someone recently said of Al, "He was the center of everything, without even trying" and we could not agree more. All who knew him loved him and he will be greatly missed.
He was preceded in death by his parents Arthur and Cordelia and brothers, Royal and Arthur Jr.
He is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Maureen and 9 children: Steven, David, Michael, William (Marliah), Rhonda (Matthew) Andrews, Alfred Joseph (AJ) II, Kathleen (Shaun) Ramirez, Suzanne (Dillon) Barrows and Samantha (Rosemarie); and 21 grandchildren Steven, Justin, Jacqueline, Brandon, Alex, Ian, Cameron, Liam, Logan, Meryssa, Makayla, Daniel, Kristofer, Alfred Joseph (AJ) III, Isabelle, Jacoby, Kaitlyn, Nicholas, Dillon, Audrey and Annabel.
A private visitation is planned for Friday, June 5 at Palm Memorial Garden, 7600 S Eastern Avenue, Las Vegas, Nevada 89123. A funeral will follow immediately at 2:00pm and all are welcome to attend. Al will be laid to rest at the Veterans Cemetery in Boulder City but internment will be private and held at a later date.
