Dr. Alexander Lu Tan passed away on January 17th, 2023, at the age of 87 years old at Charleston Ridge Senior Home, due to complications from massive stroke.
Alexander was born in Jolo, Sulu, Philippines on October 31st, 1935, and he was the 7th child out of 11 children. His Chinese name was Kho, Chu Siao. His father’s name was Kho, E. Teh and his mother’s name was Mora, E. Kiong, but he was adopted by his aunt, Tan, Sing Yong (Sister of Mora, E. Kiong) and his adopted father, who had passed away when Alexander was 7 Years Old.
Alexander attended Chinese Elementary School and Notre Dame Catholic High School in Jolo, Sulu.
He was baptized into the Roman Catholic Faith at Notre Dame Cathedral, Jolo, Sulu on December 22, 1951 at the age of 16 secretly without the knowledge of his parents and brothers and sisters.
His brothers and sisters converted to Catholic under the Guidance of Divine Providence through his actions and prayers.
He earned and graduated his Medical Degree in Medical School at University of Santo Tomas, Manila, Philippines. He was a Physician Surgeon and specialized in Internal Medicine.
He was a member of the Legion of Mary and Cursillo in the Philippines and Knights of Columbus in Bay Area, California.
He met his wife Marietta Ramos Napeñas Tan at Chinese General Hospital in Manila who worked as Registered Pharmacist. They married on August 9, 1969, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Quezon City, Philippines and they were blessed with two children Alexandra Marie born on May 12, 1970, and Alexander II on February 4, 1972.
He opened a Clinic named Xandra Marie Clinic in Jolo, Sulu and moved to San Francisco, Quezon Province and worked as Municipal Health Officer, because of revolution in Jolo. In 1976, he had worked in Tehran, Iran for 3 and a half years. While in Iran, he toured to Egypt and visited Mt. Sinai with his friends. In 1981, he had worked in University of Benin Teaching Hospital, Benin City, Nigeria thru 1989 with the family. The family toured for pilgrimage twice to: Our Lady of Lourdes, Lourdes & Eiffel Tower, Paris, France; The Basilica of Saint Peter in Chains, the Coliseum, the Trevi Fountain, Rome, Italy; St. Peter’s Basilica, Vatican and here in the U.S. as a “Tourist Visa” in 1984. In 1986, the family toured to Our Lady of Miraculous Medal Chapel, Paris, Our Lady of Lourdes, Lourdes, France; Our Lady of Fatima, Fatima, Portugal; Madrid, Spain; Amsterdam, Netherlands; Frankfurt, Germany; Bangkok, Thailand; Philippines, the U.S. and returned to Nigeria. In 1989, the family returned back to the Philippines for U.S. Immigrant Visa and immigrated here in U.S. on May 6, 1991, and spent his 12 years with his family in Bay Area, California and moved to Las Vegas, Nevada in 2003 up to the present.
While he was in the Bay Area, he worked as an Optician and while in Las Vegas, he worked as a Licensed Practical Nurse after he passed the NCLEX Board Exam.
He enjoyed the company of his families and friends. His hobby was swimming and he had a love for music and singing as well as recording his own songs to give away to families and friends. He was proud of his grandson’s (Ryan) talent in piano while he sung as duo. He was very kind, thoughtful, unselfish, forgiving, compassionate most especially, intelligent. He was very religious and was a Defender of the Faith and Blessed Mother Mary. He and his wife (Marietta) regularly attended Catholic Mass.
Alexander will forever be remembered by his wife (Marietta), by his only daughter (Xandie), by his only son (Marlex), by his only grandson (Ryan) and his only son-in-law (Harry)
