Alberto Muñiz, 86, a long-time resident of Las Vegas, passed away May 4, 2016 after a short illness. He died peacefully surrounded by his family. Alberto was born on March 13, 1930 in his native Havana, Cuba, to Avelino and Antonia Muñiz. One of two children, Muñiz left Cuba in 1961 as an exile after the Communist revolution. He fled with his soulmate and partner for life and wife, Miryea. After working his way up from a dishwasher at the Thunderbird Hotel & Casino, he settled in and rose to become a Baccarat pit supervisor at the Desert Inn, where he retired after 30-plus years in 1998. Always the consummate family man, Alberto loved betting the horses, and attending bingo sessions with his family. He is preceded in eternal rest by his wife Miryea, and eldest daughter Cindy, and survived by his son Alberto Jr., daughter Eliete Gulbransen, brother Jose “Pepe” Muñiz, 11 grandchildren, and one great grandchild. Visitation will be Friday, May 13, from 10am to 2pm, with funeral services from 2pm-3pm followed by burial at Palm Eastern. In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations in the memory of Alberto Muñiz be made to Candlelighters Childhood Cancer Foundation of Nevada.
