Walter J Oberlander, 95 of St. Petersburg, FL passed away on February 5, 2015 under the loving care of his family and Suncoast Hospice. Walter was born November 2, 1919 in Chicago, Illinois to the late Valentine and Lina (Wagner) Oberlander. His education included Stanford University (BA) and Northwestern University (MA). Walter was a World War II Army veteran.
In 1941 Walter helped Quarterback Stanford University Cardinals to a win in the Rose Bowl. He helped groom many an athlete while heading up the Athletic Department at Meadowlawn Jr High School. He was the first coach in Pinellas County to teach students the game of golf. He coached or refereed hundreds of Popwarner, Jr. High School, High School football and basketball games. His hands on teaching to students sportsmanship and to be good students was his utmost priority in life, everyone deserved a chance. An avid golfer, animal lover, enjoyes giving donations to the SPCA, Humane Society and many other wildlife charities. Walter’s all-time favorite was his classic cars, a 57’ T-Bird and his 68’ Chrysler 300.
Left to cherish his memory are his two sons Gregory J Oberlander & Glenn W Oberlander and wife Delia Oberlander, grandchildren Glenn Oberlander, Jr, Ryan Oberlander, Marissa Russell and Raymond Dehn, and great grandchildren Ryan Allen Oberlander, Austin Burnett and Mylee Ray Dehn. Also surviving is a niece Peggy Davis. Walter’s final wishes were that his family and friends consider donating to the Humane Society of the SPCA of your local county in lieu of flowers.
