Aunt Terry was a 20 year old college student when I was born. She passed away at 8:20am (my birthday is August 20), her last gotcha moment on April Fools Day. She was a fiercely independent and stubborn woman devoted to her career as a pharmacist, her family, and her beloved cocker spaniels. Thanks to her work with the VA, we traveled to places like St. Louis, Savannah, and Florida for vacations. A girl of the South, she refused to move north, so we saw her less over the years. She was tired and ready to go. We'll be okay, Aunt Terry. Go see your puppy dogs at the rainbow bridge.

Terry was uniquely and totally herself, a quality I've always admired. We were cousins, but didn't see much of each other over the decades. Just enough to make sure we all felt like family. I think of her straightforwardness and her determined refusal to wear a dress despite her very feminine surroundings. I remember being so impressed when she graduated and entered the pharmacy field at a time when nursing and teaching were still the more accepted careers for women. I always wished I could be a fly on a wall during one of her Las Vegas excursions. Farewell, Terry Lynn Smith.  Thanks for being you.
