Dr. Robert Allen died of pancreatic cancer after a bravely fought battle on July 5, 2016 at Morton Plant Rehabilitation Center in Belleair, FL. He found the only advantages of having cancer were that he no longer had to worry about his cholesterol or not using enough sunscreen in the Florida sun. Bob was known for his zest for life and always had a smile on his face and a joke or story for every situation. While he loved his many careers over the years, he was most proud of being a surrogate astronaut with NASA and also sending an experiment on Skylab into space. At the Department of Veterans' Affairs he worked long hours to obtain better care for the veterans of our country. His proudest accomplishments were bringing up two successful children who both completed their master's degrees. And his two smiling stars were his grandchildren, Ava and Leah. He especially loved playing the tenor sax for the Washington Redskins Band. An avid traveler both in the US and abroad, lover of competitive sports and nature, he sought to instill in his children a zest for life, a belief they could accomplish anything they tried, the importance of education, and the power of a smile. He is survived by his wife of 45 years Roma Allen, a son David Allen and daughter in law Erin, a daughter Jennifer Mendelsohn and son in law Neil. He is also survived by his beloved grandchildren Leah and Ava Mendelsohn. Funeral services will be held on Friday July 8, 2016 at 11 am at Anona United Methodist Church in Largo, Fl. Interment will follow in Serenity Gardens Memorial Park in Largo. The family asks that you spend time with your family, loved ones and friends enjoying nature's gifts and hold your family and friends' tight. Funeral arrangements by Serenity Funeral Home, Largo, FL.
