It is with great sadness that we announce the loss of our father and grandfather Michael Klar, 81, after fighting prostate cancer for many years. He passed just one day before the yahrzeit of our mother, Carol - his wife of 60 years.
Mike grew up in Springfield, MA, the son of Dr Jacob Klar and Minnie Klar. As a father, he raised 3 strong, independent women, Debbie (Chuck), Melissa (Mark) and Jill (Jeff), by always demonstrating a committed work ethic. We would go with him on Saturdays to the store founded by our grandfather - Gordon’s Typewriters and Stationery in Morningside Heights - where he taught us to treat all customers with respect no matter what the request, as well as how to count change correctly - skills used throughout our lives.
This ethos continues to thrive in his 7 grandchildren - Rachel, Robert, Morgan, Jason, Lauren, Andrew and Bradley - who loved their Poppy Mike - quite a legacy.
This picture captures Dad at his happiest - working at the store where he greeted the students and professors of Columbia University by name, told them a funny joke, remembered how they liked their Xerox copies made and what kind of typewriter ribbon they used. He will be deeply missed.
We do hope you are able to join us as we mourn the passing of our father, Michael Klar. Note that Avalon Somers is enforcing the NYS mask mandate. If you’re unvaccinated or experiencing COVID symptoms, please feel free to join us via Google Meet (details below).
