Joseph Browning Corbin, World War II combat veteran, police officer, author, and advocate, was called to be with the Lord on Wednesday, June 7, 2023, at his home in Seminole, Florida. He passed on peacefully at the age of 97 after a short period in Hospice care.
Born in Rappahannock County, Virginia on September 14th, 1925, Joseph was the second of six children born to Robert Hilton Corbin and Nellie Florence (Hawkins) Corbin. Joe grew up and lived on the family farms until he was drafted into the Army in December of 1943. His tour of duty included deployment to Europe where he fought in the Battle of the Bulge in December of 1944. Joe joined the Metropolitan Police Department after returning home from the war and eventually became a motorcycle police officer. He personally escorted five US presidents and several other diplomats and potentates during his career on the force. Joe’s experiences as a motorcycle police officer are documented in a book he co-authored called The Presidents’ Escort.
Joe retired from law enforcement and security work and in 1979 moved to Seminole, Florida with his then wife Ellen. He enjoyed various ventures in retirement and remained active in his church and his community.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Cleveland and Robert, sister Helen Gore, wife Ellen (Lewis) Corbin, wife Nancy (Dion) Corbin, and his son Joseph B. Corbin Jr. He is survived by his sisters Mary Jenkins of Fairfax, VA and Dorothy Dillard (Jimmy) of Spotsylvania, VA, sister-in-law Evelyn Corbin of Christiansburg, VA and numerous nephews and nieces.
Memorial services will be held on Thursday, June 29th, 2023, at Serenity Gardens Memorial Park, 13401 Indian Rocks Road, Largo, FL 33770. Visitation from 10AM to noon, church service at 12PM followed by a graveside service.
