Calio, Joseph A. 83, of Clearwater, passed away on Wednesday, August 25, 2010. He was born in Philadelphia, PA in 1926. He was a veteran serving in the Navy during WWII and a graduate of Temple University in 1949. He retired in 1978 as the owner of Brotherston Hospital Supply and became a resident of Florida on Sand Key. He was a long time member of Belleair Country Club and loved his days on the golf course. After moving to Florida, he dedicated his time and efforts to the communities of Sand Key and Clearwater. He was a founding member and past president of the Sand Key Civic Association, served on the Board of Directors of the Jolley Trolley since its inception and was a member of the Pinellas County Fire Task Force and the Clearwater Fire Task Force resulting in the building of Fire Station #44 on Sand Key. He was instrumental in the start-up of the Sand Key Beach Patrol and a member of the Environmental Advisory Board for the City of Clearwater. As a founding board member of the Clearwater Community Sailing Center, he was committed to its growth and in May, 2009, the dedication of the new addition, the “Joe Calio Veranda” was made in his honor. He is survived by his loving wife of 36 years, Staycee; children, Donna M. Chmar (Ron), Pamela S. Throne, and J. Evan Calio (Kathy); grandchildren, Brittany, Alex, Dean and Eve; and brother, Dr. Anthony J. Calio. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday, August 31, from 4-7 pm. Funeral is private. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the Clearwater Community Sailing Center, 1001 Gulf Blvd., Clearwater, FL. 33767 or the Salvation Army.
