Dan was born on May 1st, 1942, in St. Paul, Minnesota to Andrew I. and Louise K. Allan, the second oldest of four siblings. Raised in Blue Island, Illinois, Dan attended St. Benedict’s Catholic School. He graduated with a degree in Political Science with a Minor in Economics from the University of Illinois. After two years in the Army, he attended University of Kansas where he completed his Masters in Public Administration.
At the age of 28, Dan became the youngest-ever city manager in the United States in Atchison, Kansas. He then served as City Manager in Scotch Plains, New Jersey, before returning to the private sector where he was a leader in the field of high-risk insurance for amusement parks and attractions. He was also a member of the International Independent Showman’s Association.
Dan was a kind, loving father and grandfather who adored his family. He enjoyed traveling, movies, reading, animals, and a good joke. He was a great believer in fairness, justice, and kindness. He donated to numerous charitable causes and often volunteered, including delivering for Meals on Wheels. And he was a loyal and dedicated friend.
Dan was predeceased by his parents and his brother Andy. He is survived by his loving wife of fifty-two years, Martha, their son Andrew and his wife Leslie, their daughter Susan and her husband William, and grandchildren Andrew D., Lucy, Creighton, and step-granddaughter Arden. He is also survived by his sister Rita of Palos Park , Illinois and his brother Patrick of Dayton, Ohio, along with loving nieces and nephews.
A legend in his own time, Dan will be forever missed and celebrated.
Family and friends are invited to a celebration of life in Dan’s honor at Serenity Gardens Funeral Home in Largo, Florida, on Friday November 18th, 2022, from 10a to Noon.
