Steve was born in Kalamazoo, MI the youngest of three boys. He is survived by his brother William V. Sage (Lynne), four nieces and two nephews, ten great-nieces and nephews, son, Gordon Pew (Kerry), and his special friend Debbie Carlson. He was preceded in death by his parents Robert V. Sage and Gertrude M. Sage and a brother, Robert E. Sage.
He grew up in Kalamazoo riding bicycles on the hills of the Western Michigan University and Kalamazoo College campuses while still finding time to fish in Arcadia Creek. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1971 during the Vietnam War and served two years at Ft. Benning, GA. He entered Michigan State University on the G.I. Bill at an age older than most freshman students, completing both undergraduate studies and his doctorate in veterinary medicine with honors in 1981. He worked for ten years at the Benson Animal Hospital in Lansing. In 1991 he acquired the Mt. Hope Veterinary Hospital. After serving the Lansing community for over 30 years, he closed the practice in 2022.
His life has been full of adventure, including long-distance bicycling events. He completed five DALMAC tours to the Mackinac Bridge, including a Quad Century going 100 miles a day four days. His passion was photography, which took him on travels around the world covering four continents, including Africa, Antarctica, North and South America, as well as many U.S. and Canadian National Parks and wildlife preserves. He was an excellent bird photographer and was actively involved with the Capital Area Audubon Society.
