Sofie was extremely loving, compassionate and was always very generous with her time, attention and money throughout her life. As she would tell others, “I’m a hugger” and believed that hugs could soothe a troubled soul.
Sofie was a licensed nurse (LPN) who lovingly cared for her patients.
After moving to the Catholic Diocese of Lansing, she worked for the Office of Persons with Disabilities and Office of Hispanic Relations. There, she also traveled to Mexico on medical mission trips where she acted as language interpreter to assist the less fortunate. In 1990 the Diocese awarded Sofie the Life Ministry Award for her work in International Economic Concerns.
Sofie, with her devoted husband of 64 years, the late LaVern ‘Whitey’ Stover, raised successful children through their loving and faithful example.
Sofie was the last surviving child of Jose and Guadalupe Arreguin, having survived siblings Benita Guillen, Larry Arreguin, Jose Arreguin, and Augustine Arreguin.
Although Sofie lived a long and reverent life, her family will truly miss her faithful and loving spirit and her constant guidance, support and her many, many prayers.
Sofie is survived by her children, Patricia Stover, Vivian Anita Stover-Mitchell (Dr. Richard Mitchell), Linda Stover, Gloria Heckman (Roy), Robbie Smith (Andy), Michael Stover (Crystal), Raymond Stover, Mary Blair (Jack); along with many devoted grandchildren, including Dustin Heckman (Stephanie), Jordan Smith, AJ Smith, Kelsey Smith, Devon Stover, Jackson Blair, Braxton Stover and Mariesa Stover; and her great grandchild Haidon Heckman; along with her many friends.
A visitation for Sofie will be held Friday, September 23, 2022 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish, 3815 S Cedar St., Lansing, MI 48910, followed by a funeral Mass at 11:00 AM.
A private burial service will follow for immediate family only at the Fort Custer National Cemetery.
