Born and raised in Lansing, Shirley was the youngest of three children and attended Eastern High School. She met her husband of 59 years, Richard Heil, while working at Oldsmobile. She later worked for the state of Michigan and the Michigan Retail Hardware Association. Shirley and Richard raised three children: Stephen, Susan, and Sharon.
Shirley was beloved by everyone who knew her. Her smile and sweet demeanor brightened any room, and her sense of humor made people smile even during the most difficult of times.
Shirley was devoted to her family and always put their needs ahead of her own. Making sure that her family had everything they might want or need was always her first priority. Shirley adored her eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Putting a smile on their faces warmed her heart, and she loved to spoil them.
Spending time with family was one of Shirley’s favorite things to do. Her home was always buzzing with visitors, whether for a family get-together, or just someone dropping in to say hello. When you visited her house, you knew you’d be guaranteed to smile and leave with a full belly.
When she did take time for herself, Shirley enjoyed reading the Lansing State Journal and watching the New York Yankees. She was especially fond of Derek Jeter, and particularly enjoyed it when the Yankees beat the Detroit Tigers.
Shirley was preceded in death by her sister, Jeanette McComb, and son-in-law Mitchell McAlister. Surviving to cherish Shirley’s memory are her loving husband, Richard; children Stephen Heil, Susan McAlister, and Sharon (Daniel) Harris; grandchildren Kyle (Amy) McAlister, Jacob (Karianne) Harris, Lucas (Angela) McAlister, Danielle Harris, Leslie Lutz, Shelby McAlister, Stephen Heil, and Jolena McAlister; great grandchildren Maci Harris, Louis McAlister, Emerson McAlister, Ella McAlister, and Avianna Gadd, brother, Bill (Marilyn) Riddle; brothers-in-law, Thomas McComb, Greg (Faith) Heil, sister-in-law, Dee (Frank) Robinson, and numerous nieces and nephews.
