Born in Detroit, MI, her family soon moved to the, then rural, South Lansing area, establishing a grocery at the corner of Cedar and Rouse streets. Ruth lived almost all of her life on Rouse Street.
After graduating from Eastern High School, Ruth attended business school. She found work in the office of a Lansing doctor. It was there that she met her future husband, William Howe. Ruth and William, “Bill” were married June 3, 1938, a marriage lasting nearly 60 years. Soon after their marriage, they began their family business, Denstaedt’s Quick Serve Hardware, which became a long time and well known fixture in South Lansing.
Ruth was preceded in death by her husband Bill, sister Inez Price and half-brother Kenneth Olson. She is survived by sons Paul (Carolyn) Howe and Kenneth Howe. Also left to cherish her memory are grandchildren Karina Foster and Kelly (Michael) Angell and great grandchildren Aleksander Foster, Nadia Foster, Madelynn Angell, and Isaac Angell.
Ruth loved to travel, having visited most every state in the U.S. as well as several countries in Europe. Even in her last days, she just enjoyed getting out for a ride to see the sites.
Ruth was an active volunteer, having donated many years of community service through the Rebekah’s, Eastern Star, the DAR, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, and Judson Memorial Baptist Church. Ruth was honored by Lansing Christian Services for more than a decade of work with the Love Clothing Center.
