Paul retired from the State of Michigan’s Department of Transportation in 1998 after 40 years of dedication. During this time, he specialized in building bridges and took great pride in ensuring they were built right and accepted nothing else, even if it meant insisting a new build be torn down and built right. For many reasons, he was well respected by those he worked with, many of which were lifelong friends, and had been described as the ‘conscience of the Highway Department.’
Paul had many hobbies and kept his life full. His hobbies included photography and developing his own film and photos in the basement. He dabbled in making homemade wine and beer until deciding it would taste better if purchased at the store. He loved to golf, fish with grandsons, spend time with Misty, his furry friend, and in most recent days, play cribbage with his friend, Wayne, where the game never became competitive, and the winner never gloated – just kidding!
Paul is survived by his wife, Karen, of 54 years. He was a wonderful father to Kelly (Michael) King, and Lindy (Jeffery) Daman; loving siblings, Larry Breeden, Shirley (Larry) Bennett, and Sharon (David) Bradke; grandsons, Anthony (Mandy) King, Ryan King, Ross Daman, and Jonathan Daman. He was preceded in death by his sister-in-law, Debbra Breeden.
In honoring Paul’s wishes, the family will remember him during a private service.
Paul stood strong in his convictions and did not waiver. He stood just as strong in the love he had for his family and many close friends. We always knew we were loved! As you drive over a bridge in Michigan, know that it may have been one of his and take a moment to smile and remember Paul.
