It is with great fondness and love that we remember the life of an incredible man, Mr. Michael Patrick Crabb. Born on March 11, 1946 in Muskegon to Donald and Libby Crabb, Michael’s life was nothing short of extraordinary beginning at a young age. He often recalled his days growing up with his parents and sister in the circus, from childhood up until age 12, and often regaled humorous anecdotes of the circus animals and performers he grew fond of. By nature of such an upbringing, Michael and his family moved around the country until they finally settled in Michigan where Michael graduated from Grand Rapids Central High in 1964. In 1966, Michael graduated Junior College top 6 of his class. For a time, Michael joined Grand Rapids police force as an undercover investigator. His case stories were so descriptive and unintentionally humorous, that he once recalled a judge could not keep his composure in court after reviewing Michael’s case files. He was a storyteller, and a very good one at that.
His knack for theatrics and flair would lead him to his true passion- in the classroom as a theater director. By the age of 22, Michael’s work with children at Wester Middle School received White House praise by James Keogh, assistant to President Richard Nixon. Michael poured his heart and soul into theatrical classics such as Peter Pan, Annie, Wizard of Oz, and The Sound of Music. He believed in creating a safe space for students to express their exuberance and recalled many times throughout his life how incredibly proud he was of his students over the years. Michael directed several musicals for non-profit group KIHO (Kids Interested in Helping Others) in the Lansing area and proudly displayed memorabilia in his home until present day. The proceeds from these events were donated to local charities to support children with special needs.
Friends nearest to Michael describe him as an adventurous spirit and eternal optimist, always ready with a compliment, a story, or a snack. Michael traveled extensively in his later years, frequently visiting some of his favorite international spots- such as Darling Harbor in Sydney, Australia, Paris, Amsterdam, and London- making friends nearly everywhere he went. He enthusiastically participated in educational seminars and teacher trainings in Australia yearly and developed deep friendships with his students. He prided himself on being able to help people reach their dreams.
Michael is preceded in death by his mother and father, Donald and Libby Crabb, and sister, Susan Harding. While he did not have children of his own, he leaves behind two dear friends and “honorary daughters”, Tamara Olton and Angela Shipman of Lansing, MI, who miss him dearly. Michael’s passing occurred unexpectedly on April 20, 2021 after complications from a recent surgery.
When asked how he wished to be remembered in this life, Michael wanted the world to know “I cared”. He once recalled, “[hardship] seems sad, but it forms you. That’s why I appreciate everything.”
