Kathryn Louise (Shier) Robinson, age 75, peacefully departed this life in her sleep at Dobie Road Medical Care Facility in Okemos, Michigan, after a hard-fought battle with chronic illness. Our hearts are heavy as we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend.
Born on December 2, 1948, in Lansing, Michigan, Kathryn was the youngest and only daughter of four children born to the late Gordon and Mary Ann (Mallek) Shier. Her strength and resilience were evident early on as she kept pace with her three older brothers. After graduating from Msgr. John A. Gabriels High School, Kathryn married Arthur Robinson Jr. Although they later divorced, Kathryn maintained a civil friendship with Art, a gift for which her three children are forever grateful.
Kathryn earned an associate’s degree from Lansing Community College and dedicated over 40 years of her life as a board member, office manager, and ultimately property manager for Woodbridge Commons Cooperative. Her professional life exemplified a love of community, intelligence, and tenacity.
A devout Catholic, Kathryn was a cherished member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish. Her unwavering faith was a cornerstone of her life. Kathryn had a zest for life, and her travels to Europe—both during high school and later in life—remained among her fondest memories. She reveled in the beauty of nature, especially during springtime, and often enjoyed a good scotch on the rocks while watching the sunset on the shores of Lake Michigan.
Her love for animals extended beyond mere appreciation; Kathryn actively rescued and adopted numerous “family members.” Her extraordinary sense of humor enlivened gatherings, and she would light up at the opportunity to engage in spirited political banter. A lover of literature, she devoured books and appreciated a truly good action flick. Music played a significant role in Kathryn’s life. The songs of John Denver, The Beatles, Earth Wind, and Fire, and later Nelly Furtado and Ed Sheeran serve as poignant links to specific moments her family shared with her.
Above all, Kathryn cherished family togetherness. Having all her “chicks in the nest” brought her solace and filled her heart. She often declared that her greatest accomplishment was her family.
Kathryn is survived by her children, Robin (William) Kennedy, Darrin (Emma) Robinson, and Terra Davis; grandchildren, Mariah, Isaiah, Jaden, Mikayla, Lillian, Miranda, Niya, and Alijah; and great-grandchild, Kaizen. She also leaves behind her brothers, Philip and Thomas (Julie) Shier, along with a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, in-laws, and friends.
Kathryn is reunited with loved ones in heaven including her parents, Gordon and Mary Ann (Mallek) Shier; her brother, Frederick Shier; and sisters-in-law Sandra and Anne Shier.
The Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, July 8th, at 11 a.m. at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, 3815 S. Cedar, Lansing, MI, with Rev. Fr. John Byers as celebrant. In lieu of flowers, and to honor her great love for animals, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Capital Area Humane Society.
Kathryn’s children extend their heartfelt thanks to all who positively contributed to her life, happiness and care. Her legacy will remain in the hearts of all who knew her. She is deeply loved and will be missed beyond measure.
