John was born in Hamtramck, MI to John C. and Anna (Yaracz) Olszewski. He graduated from Hamtramck High School then attended Michigan Tech. He loved his time in the UP and shared many stories of the shenanigans he and his friends got into. After college, John joined the Army where he proudly served as a mechanic.
After college, John joined the Michigan Department of Transportation where he became known as Johnny O. He worked as a concrete specialist for 38 years where he traveled and made many friends along the way. A few of John's favorite sites were on bridges like the Mackinac and Rouge River. He spoke of these often, and was proud to work on such monuments. John enjoyed teaching others the craft at MDOT, Lansing Community College, and Michigan Concrete Association.
It was working for the State that he met his loving wife of 35 years, Sally. Together they finished their long esteem careers with MDOT and planned their retirement. They spent many summers at their cottage on Littlefield Lake while enjoying their kids, grandkids, and all of their friends. John always welcomed anyone and everyone to the lake and loved an evening around the fire.
John was also an avid sports fan. Year round he enjoyed everything Detroit, Lions and Tigers, as well as the Michigan State Spartans. He was happy with any game on T.V. with plenty of snacks to enjoy during the games.
John is survived by his sister, Rosemarie Olszewski. He also leaves behind his loving wife, Sally; their children, Suzette (Joe) Parks and Stephen Olszewski; 10 grandchildren; and 8 great grandchildren.
John is preceded in death by his parents and his son, Greg Walker.
A memorial service will be held at 12PM Saturday, March 18, 2023 at Gorsline Runciman Tiffany Chapel, 3232 W. Saginaw St., Lansing. A visitation will be held an hour before the service. Following the service, the family invites everyone to a luncheon at the funeral home to continue to tell stories of John.
The family would like to give a special thanks to The Willows at East Lansing and ProMedica Home Health, their wonderful medical and support staff, for providing compassionate and supportive care to John for the last few years.
