I can't put into words the loss I feel.  My Dad was caring, thoughtful, funny, generous and much more.  I admired his commitment to family and his integrity.  He inspired me to be a better person.  If I could pick anyone to model my life after, it would be him.  He, for the most part, loved life and he made the most out of his time here on Earth.  He was my mentor, my Hero, and the best Dad a girl could ask for.  I just wished I could have given him a hug and told him goodbye.  I will miss him so much.  Jill Chappell (Shepard)

Dear Julane,

I graduated from Holt High School with Jim.  The class of 1956 s something special.   I am not sure if I am proud of the fact that we were the last senior class to take a senior trip.  We went to New York City by bus and boy did we all have fun.  We had several out-standing athletes, some even went pro.  Several of us went on to college and got several degrees.  Several went into the Military and moved up the ranks.  Jim, was indeed a member of a very  special class.

Growing up mid-century in Holt Michigan, everyone knew the Chappell boys. Each were well liked, but were individuals on their own. Jim was two years ahead of me in school, but one of my best friends, Bonnie (who was Jim‘s classmate) was a good friend to him.  She taunted him relentlessly.  I was always impressed on how he handled it with humor and dignity. Great job Jim!
Later in life he and his family were neighbors of ours (Walker Street neighborhood). My girls (Alice and Jean) played with his girls occasionally. It often gave us a chance to catch up on friends and family.
When my husband and I wintered in Orange Beach Alabama, we would meet up with Jim and Julane for dinner  frequently.  Conversations were always happy and he would tell of his golf games with his brothers.
My husband, Larry  has passed,  I know this is a difficult time for the Chappell family— you all have my deepest sympathy. This is the one time in life “you cannot run through the thistles “.  -Old Scottish proverb
Jim will be missed.


Jim and I worked together at the State of Michigan back in the 70's and I learned a lot from him.  He was a good friend and I am sorry to learn of his passing.  He no doubt is resting in the room God prepared for him a d is walking the heavenly golf courses in preparation of being united with his family again someday.  May he rest in peace.

Jim was a school classmate all 13years in Holt. He was a good athlete and a fun person and after graduation we worked together on class reunions. My most sincere sympathy to Julane and the family.Joan  Smith class of 1956

I worked with Jim at Secretary of State and golfed in same league for many years. A very fine man and fun to be around. Lots of good memories on the golf course. Heartfelt condolences on his passing.

I worked with Jim at Department of State for several years before he went to Assigned Claims. His Secretary Margaret sat next to me also a secretary for Leland who worked for Jim.
Jim always talked about his daughters who were young at the time. 
Jim was a great leader! My deepest sympathy to his wife and family.
