Helen M. Spencer, age 93, of Adrian passed away at Brookfield Independent Living Facility on February 5, 2017 at 9:54 a.m. She was born to Princess and Charles Furst on October 2, 1923 at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing, Michigan.
She married Roy W. Spencer, her Lansing Eastern High School sweetheart, March 17, 1943 in a Methodist Church north of Time Square in New York City while Roy was stationed in New York with the U.S. Coast Guard. Helen and Roy were blessed with 73 years wonderful years of marriage. Helen was “Rosie the Riveter” while Roy was at Sea during World War II. She worked at the Wright Aircraft factory building engines for the B-29 super bomber in Passaic, New Jersey. Helen and Roy loved to travel; they took trips to all 50 states including Hawaii and Alaska; Western Canada by train; and cruises to the Caribbean, Central America, Mexico and Aruba.
Helen enjoyed Church service at Brookdale Adrian with Reverend Greg Burdine. Helen worked for both Bell Telephone Company and REO Motors car as a switchboard operator and for Lansing Community College in their call center.
Helen and her family loved country living, children’s 4H Silver Spurs Horse Club, camping, fishing, hunting, baseball, swimming, and ice skating where she and Roy met.
Helen is survived by her husband, Roy; Son, Scott (Debra) of Manitou Beach; and daughter, Trudy Spencer of Silverthorne, Colorado; four grandchildren, two step grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.
There will be a funeral service for Helen on Thursday, February 9, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. with visitation one hour prior at Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes 900 E. Michigan Ave., Lansing, MI.
