Helen M. Ouimet Jones, age 93, passed away on Wednesday, June 29, 2011 in Spanish Fort, Alabama. She was born in Lansing, Michigan on December 14, 1917, the daughter of Harry H. and Katherine Ouimet. She graduated from Old Central High School in Lansing in 1935, attended Sparrow Hospital Nursing School and LBU Business College, both in Lansing. During World War II she was employed by the Railroad Retirement Board in Washington D. C., where she married Victor P. Jones. In Lansing she worked for Fischer Body, Michigan Department of State, and Jacobson’s. She resided in East Lansing more than 40 years and was a member of the First Baptist Church. She also was a 40-year member of the Walnut Hills Country Club and former Women’s Champion.
Mrs. Jones is survived by a niece, Lynne Hayes and her husband Charles, of Roswell, Georgia, and a cousin, Joanne Silvestri, of Canton, Ohio. She is preceded in death by her husband, Mr. Victor P. Jones, who passed away in 1995, and a brother, Mr. Thomas Ouimet, who died in 1996. She was a cousin of Francis Ouimet, the American golfer, who beat Englishman Harry Vardon at the U.S. Open in 1913.
Mrs. Jones lived in Sandestin, Florida more than 28 years and was a member of the Santa Rosa Golf Club and Beach Club. She also was a member of the former Destin Hospital Service Auxiliary for 20 years. She was a member of the Women’s Group at the Santa Rosa Beach Community Church of Santa Rosa Beach, Florida.
A graveside service will be held 10 A.M. Wednesday, July 6, 2011 in Evergreen Cemetery with Rev. Michael Dunkelberger of Christ Community Church officiating. Helen will be laid to rest next to her beloved husband, Victor.
