David George Smith passed away at the age of 80 on October 1, 2024, in Okemos, Michigan. Born in Lansing, Michigan, on September 2, 1944, to Rolland George Smith and Margaret Alice (Maguire) Smith, David was known for his dry sense of humor and unyielding loyalty to family and friends. He graduated from Sexton High School and attended Michigan State University for three years, where he developed a lifelong passion for MSU sports.
David married Amy Lynn Hatinger on October 24, 1999, in Mackinac Island, Michigan. Throughout his life, David held various roles, including sales positions, mortgage origination, and owning a small business. He was deeply committed to the substance abuse recovery community, always extending a helping hand or a visit to those in need.
David is survived by his wife, Amy Lynn Hatinger; children, Jeffrey David Smith and Michael Patrick Smith (Ela Matter); grandchildren, Joaquin Matter and Val Matter-Smith; and cousins, Jamie Vess, Marsha Kerns (George Kerns), and Brian Koon.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, October 13th at Gorsline Runciman Funeral Home, located at 900 E. Michigan Ave., Lansing, MI 48912. Visitation will begin at 12pm, followed by the service at 1pm. Attendees are invited to stay for light refreshments and to share stories of David’s life.
David’s life can be summed up in the phrase "Just For Today," reflecting his approach to life's challenges and his commitment to living in the moment. He will be remembered for his devotion to his family, his humor, and his service to others.
