Bruce was born on April 25, 1944 in Flint, Michigan to Janice and Leo Bigelow. He obtained his PhD from the University of Pennsylvania having a multi-disciplinary major that was primarily in social work. Bruce took employment with Michigan State University where he was a professor and administrator for just under 20 years. He was a member of the Sierra Club for over 40 years and spent many years devoting his free time to volunteer at numerous places including various nature centers and food banks, Big Brothers Big Sisters, and MSU.
Bruce found enjoyment in reading fiction, drinking tea, and taking walks with his dear friend, Fayyaz. He had a passion for archeology and genealogy. More than anything in the world, Bruce adored his beloved children. His family and friends fondly remember Bruce as being well-natured, genuine, brilliant, and the kindest man you could ever want to meet. His wholesome and humble personality will be missed and his memory forever cherished by all those who knew and loved him.
Bruce is survived by his daughter, Brynn Sullivan and his son, Julian Bigelow. He is preceded in death by his nieces, Heather Bonner and Maggie Mae Jones and his parents, Leo and Janice (Tupper) Bigelow.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, September 10, 2023 at 12:00 PM at Fenner Nature Center’s Davis Nature Pavilion, 2020 E Mt. Hope Ave., Lansing, MI 48910.
