Bernice fills a warm place in my heart. Although my father Ridge's cousin she was like an Aunt to me. I often stopped and chatted with her when she lived on Mt. Tabor in Portland. I loved her little house and Art White, too. Like a man I don't write much but was always aware of what she was up to as her cousin Doris Rhodes writes to us monthly. She was a very special lady. I am thankful that I have so many great memories of her. She taught me many things about life and love. I will miss our latenight talks, we had when i would come to visit. I hope to be as lively as she was. She was so young at heart. love her always,

Bernice was such a special person.  I got to know her in Artists of South Whidbey.  She was an excellent artist and was always fun to be with on trips to Winthrop or the ocean.  She was an active participant and will be missed by all who knew her.

Bernice was a sweet and gracious lady and will be missed by so many. She never stopped learning. Just kept on painting. She always had a smile and a ready chuckle.  I feel fortunate to have known her.

I did not know Bernice well.  Her daughter Paula is my dear friend and introduced me to her.  A year ago I shared a dream of learning to paint.  She told me Bernice had been painting for many years.  I was completely blown away by her energy and her work the day we spent at her home!   She shared her work with me and was so kind and willing to sit while I shared some of my very first paintings.  I'll never forget the inspirational feeling and words I got from her!  I will miss her.

I loved Bernice and will miss her all the rest of my life.  I was her friend long ago when we worked at Pischel Yearbooks, she would say "If Jill does a roast, will you ask me over tonight"  We were the ones helping to move her to Portland and she was a great friend when Jill was in nursing school there. I loved the garden at her house in Portland where exotic trees bore strange blossoms, like the Clerodendrum tree...We kept in touch, and she was beloved   Carolyn Hesser in College Place, WA

"Bernice and I shared a lunch together on one of Deon's wonderful art field trips to the Washington coast. She shared some stories of her youth with me that referenced a time so long ago that I had to ask her her age since I couldn't believe she'd lived during those times. She told me in no uncertain terms that it was none of my business how old she was. "People treat you differently when they know how old you are," she said. Now I finally know, Bernice, and you were young and vital to the end. You are my inspiration. It was such a pleasure to know you.

I was sad to hear of Bernice's passing, but I am happy to know that she died in her studio, a place near and dear to her heart.  She was a great painter and a wonderful woman.

I have cherished memories of Bernice. I own one of her paintings purchased a few short years ago. I am so grateful I have this small token of remembrance. I loved this lady. What a joy she was. Such a wonderful talent. Her smile and laughter were infectious. I am blessed to have known her.
