Survived by his 2 sons Peter (Lesley), Erik (Gaby) along with many grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife Joan of 59 years, his youngest son Brody and his granddaughter Katelyn.
Dad was a lifetime sailor becoming an experienced Ocean racer. He received his teaching certificate in 1952 and joined the RCAF from 1953 – 1955. He was an Air Canada pioneer starting with TCA in 1956 and retiring after 36 years as a Captain.
During his career, public service was his passion joining Surrey politics as an Alderman in 1972 until stepping down as Mayor in 1978.
He was on many Boards and Committees including Peace Arch Hospital, Fraser River Harbour Commission, BC Transit and the Surrey Public Library as well as the Chairman of the Board for Surrey Metro Savings from 1981 – 1992.
Dad held a Class ‘1’ truck license and bought his first Harley Dyna at 76 years of age. Bill and his Wife Joan travelled to Puerto Penasco every winter for 15 years, reluctantly stopping when mom’s health deteriorated. Dad was making plans to return this November.
Dad’s philosophy was – ‘Leave the World a better place than when you came into it and try to improve your own community’ He was proud to do this in Surrey where he raised his family.
Service will be held at Henderson Funeral home – 20786 Fraser Hwy, Langley V3A 4G6 Wednesday March 13, 2019 at 11 am. Bill’s favorite Jazz band – The Louie Quinn Jazz Duo will be there to play as guests arrive before
the ceremony and afterwards when Sandwiches and refreshments will be served.
