It is with profound sorrow that we share that on August 11, 2022 we lost Charles Robert Horton. Charles is survived by his beloved wife of 76 years, Mary (nee Shaw); his children Curtis (Vicky), Tracey Pratt (Graham), John (Hanneke) and Shawn; granddaughters Amanda Rolleman (Peter), Crystal, Kimberley and Tasia; great grandsons Ryan and Wesley Rolleman; and many nieces and nephews.
Dad was born in Vancouver, the sixth child of Lillian Agnes and Alfred Edward Horton and was the last of seven siblings to pass.
Dad enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy in 1943 and served on the HMCS Minas which played an active role in the D-Day invasion. While on leave in Scotland, Dad spotted a lass on the beach, told his mates “I’m going to marry that girl.”, and then went about to do just that! That determination resulted in Mary’s family emigrating and starting a new arm of the Shaw clan in Canada.
After the war Dad enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force thereafter providing a total of 23 years of service to his country. Dad was an accomplished tradesman, earning tickets as a gas fitter, steam fitter, plumber and electrician, all of which he put to good use building several of the family’s homes. After retiring from the RCAF, Dad and Mom became entrepreneurs operating small businesses in Kamloops, Oliver and Penticton. Dad and Mom made their final retirement in 2004, and then enjoyed many years traveling with family. Dad particularly loved to visit Scotland and Maui, which they did many times. Dad was enthralled watching the wildlife that shared his gardens and could easily pass hours observing the hummingbirds, quail and skunks that frequented the yard.
We wish to express our deepest gratitude to the staff at Chartwell Langley Gardens for supporting Dad’s last wish to spend his remaining days with the love of his life, Mary; and for the years of loving care and support they have provided to Dad and Mom.
