Robert Lee Gordon was born September 3, 1941 in Egypt, Texas to the late Robert & Annie Gordon. He was educated in Texas City, Texas and was a graduate of Booker T. Washington High School. He furthered his education by attending Long Beach City College in Long Beach, California graduating with an Associate in Arts Degree. Robert served in the United States Navy as Hospital Corpsman. During his military career he traveled to Long Beach, California, Tulsa, Oklahoma, Vietnam, Asia, and various parts of the world. After 20 years of service he retired at the rank of Chief Petty Officer in 1980. After his retirement from the military, Robert refused to just sit at home and worked for Cal Trans (California Transportation) and retired after 18 years. Robert settled in Long Beach, California for 41 years with his late wife, Dorothy R. Gordon (nee Greene), and four children Brenda, John, Robyn and Linda. Religion was an enduring theme in his life. He accepted Christ as his Savior at an early age and was baptized at Barbour's Chapel in Texas City, Texas. Robert was a dedicated member of Saint Mark Baptist Church in Long Beach, California until his move back to Texas. Robert served in various auxiliaries and he especially enjoyed singing in the Men's Choir when he attended St. Marks Baptist Church. After the death of his beloved wife Dorothy Gordon, Robert returned to his childhood home of Texas City, Texas in 2007 and resumed his worship at Barbour's Chapel until his declining health interrupted his attendance. Robert enjoyed spending time with brother, his extended family, and Denise Hill. On Tuesday, December 27, 2011, Robert made his final transition from the pain of this world to a sphere of infinite joy and rest when he was received up into glory to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Robert is preceded in death by his parents Robert Sr. and Annie Gordon, his wife Dorothy Gordon, his siblings Barbara "Christine" Carter, Elphonso Matthews, Agnes Ricks, and his grandson, Samuel. Robert left behind an extended family that will treasure precious memories of him. He is survived by his brother, Lee Gordon (Claudette) of Texas City, Texas, four children, Brenda Johnson (William), John McLeod, Robyn Gordon-Peterson (Eric) Linda Gordon, uncles Joel, Walter, Norman, and Jimmy of Eagle Lake; 13 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Also, left to celebrate his life are his fiancée and companion, Denise Hill and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and his church families from Barbour's Chapel and St. Mark's Baptist Church, Long Beach, California.
